A number of automotive companies have experimented with concept modelling systems which allow the designer to create 'total' product models. These models are able to embed functional, performance, ergonomic, cost and manufacturing related rules within the geometric descriptions of the product. This complete representation of the product is clearly beneficial in promoting design automation, form/function tradeoffs, design/manufacturing integration and economic production. This paper describes the development of two intelligent modelling systems, the first built within a commercial concept modelling system and the second designed as a platform for research into CAD architectures and product model representation.
