After a brief overview of the WR-21, a new Intercooled-Recuperated (ICR) gas turbine engine under development by the U. S. Navy, this paper describes in detail the design, the materials, and the heat transfer characteristics of the air-gas plate-fin recuperator, the air-coolant plate-fin primary intercooler, and the coolant-seawater plate-frame secondary intercooler. Special emphasis is placed on the multi-faceted development effort that is required to ensure not only the successful performance but also the high reliability of the systems operating in a very harsh environment.
