PIV is used for resolving the flow structure of the bow wave around a ship model in a towing tank. The measurements are performed at Reynolds numbers ranging between 2.8 x 10 6 to 7.4 x 10 6 and Froude numbers between 0.17 and 0.45. The focus is on the bow region including the liquid sheet upstream of the bow wave, the origin of the bow wave and the flow near the body downstream of the wave crest. The water surface elevation is also measured using the intersection of the laser sheet with the surface. The results provide a detailed view on the flow structure within mild and steep, breaking waves. In most cases the flow within the wave contains a dominant vorticity train and several counter rotating structures. The liquid sheet upstream of the bow wave is also dissected. The results show the origin and evolution of high vorticity flow, shich is generated during formation of the liquid sheet. This flow remains attached to the model and can be well downstream of the bow wave.
