Performance of an automated workcell, which integrates robots, machine vision modules, and intelligent control techniques for the purpose of fish processing, is evaluated in a framework of task sensing. A high level context, describing the current status of the machine, is derived through a hierarchy of data processing. A performance measure is then estimated by comparing the context information with the expected performance, in a multidimensional, fuzzy state space. The task sensing system is implemented in a laboratory workcell. Experiments carried out with this prototype fish processing workcell are described and the results are summarized.
