Accurate evaluation of vehicle air conditioning components presents difficulties. The perceived complexity of the refrigeration cycle, the control difficulties, the interpretation of results and the physical requirements of refrigerant handling are all contributory factors. A synopsis of underlying theory is presented and the development and function of a 'Universal Refrigerant Supply Module' is described. This unit, together with its integrated control, data acquisition and results presentation package enables thermal performance tests on evaporators and condensers to be carried out automatically and more quickly and effectively than has hitherto been possible.
