A high efficiency, lightweight, modular air conditioning system called SmartCool is being developed for mobile applications. This unit incorporates a compact two-stage centrifugal compressor using a DC brushless permanent magnet motor and microprocessor control. The system uses a non-CFC refrigerant that is more efficient than R134a and operates at significantly lower pressures. The system incorporates aerospace, electronic and electric motor technologies. The module reduces the vehicle HVAC system complexity, weight and size. It increases a/c system efficiency and provides operational advantages relative to R134a automotive a/c systems. The modular concept also simplifies assembly plant installation and service procedures.
