High charge-air pressure, turbochargers with a high overall efficiency and exhaust systems which contribute little towards utilization of the exhaust pulses at part load, result in there being a shortage of charge-air pressure at reduced engine speed, e.g. when fixed-pitch propellers are operating at part load. To overcome this deficiency there are a number of possible measures, such as auxiliary blowers, turbochargers with auxiliary drive, pulse charging at part load, blowing off air or exhaust gas at full load, provision of a bypass from compressor to turbine - with or without heat exchanger - variable equivalent nozzle area of the turbines, 'sequential' turbocharging, as well as variable or fixed valve timings optimized for part load with increased charge-air pressure. The results, presented herein, of an exhaustive thermodynamic investigation should enable the most suitable solution to be chosen for given conditions.
