The paper is dealing with degrading tendency of fuel oil trouble occurrence cases of machinery and relationship between fuel oil properties and trouble kinds, using the questionnaire reports concerning the above problem from the running ships in 201 member companies belong to The Japanese Shipowners' Association during 1981. Determination of the correlation value between fuel oil with specified item and item of troubles is intended to be obtained by analyzing above data. The following conclusions can be deduced from this investigation. It was deduced that the general degradation of world-wide marine fuel oil was obviously recognized from the tendency of increasing trouble occurrences caused by fuel oil. Main engine troubles occurred in the elements mainly such as fuel oil pump, fuel injection valve, piston and piston rings while troubles in auxiliary machinery occurred mainly is purifier and oil strainer. Trouble kinds such as abnormal accumulation of sludge in purifier and strainer clogging were predominant while trouble kinds such as vapour look and fuel oil pump sticking were increasing. Relation between trouble kinds and fuel oil properties was clearly recognized as follows. Carbon residue: purifier, inferior combustion, piston, piston ring and exhaust valve. Asphaltene: purifier and inferior combustion. Water: strainer, inferior combustion and fuel oil line. Ash: strainer. Analytical values of metallic impurities in the fuel oil were seldom measured, while these were measured in many cases of both fuel oil of North America West coast and the heavy fuel oil of viscosity 150 about 200 cSt. Si content was clearly related to that of Al. Higher Si content promoted abnormal wear of piston, piston ring and cylinder liner, while higher Al content promoted strainer clogging and purifier trouble. Na content was obviously related to supercharger surging. As the troubles occurred mainly in purifier, strainer, fuel oil pump, fuel injection valve, piston and piston ring, not only developments and modifications on these elements must be carried out by makers, but also good maintenance of machinery, fine pre-treatment of fuel oil and careful operation of machinery must be achieved by ship operators. In order to establish the effective counter-measures to degraded fuel, the investigation same as this must be carried out continuously obtaining the correlation between fuel oil properties and trouble kinds by analyzing the numerous data newly collected.
