In order to increase train speed without overloading the existing infrastructure, the locomotive fleet requires thermal engines with high specific power for its non-electrified lines. The diesel engine, supercharged with the 'Hyperbar' process is liable to meet this need, like the gas turbine, but approximately with the energy output of a diesel motor. As an experimental basis, an SNCF shop installed a 590 kW (800 hp) POYAUD 520 - V8 type 8 cylinder engine on an RGP railcar in June 1977. This train set is now on commercial service. A first step consisted in adapting the engine environment to rail traction. Problems were met generally through minor alteration. In a second step, at the present time in progress, and this for about 5000 hours will give us information on the reliability and the lifetime of the different components. Encouraging results obtained to this day foresee a new and favourable era for diesel engine in rail traction both for mean-power railcars and line locomotives of some thousands of kilowatts.
