Continuous development towards higher mean effective pressures in turbocharged two stroke cycle marine propulsion engines has been made possible by raising the scavenge pressure at the expense of the internal energy of the exhaust gases. This development results in lower cost per kW for the engine on its own, as well as reducing the specific fuel consumption. However, given a pre-determined turbine inlet temperature, the turbine outlet temperature will became lower for high scavenge pressures. This affects the potential waste heat conversion to auxiliary power and unless corrective steps are taken, the overall plant efficiency will decrease as additional fuel must be burnt in diesel generating engines. Alteration to the scavenge and exhaust ports and acceptance of a higher turbine inlet temperature upgrades the heat available from the turbine outlet and attention to the heat recovery cycle detail, as well as to the manner in which power is used on board the ship, results in an improved utilisation of fuel from the point of view of the plant as a whole.
