The two-stage turbocharged UE-E type engine which was developed in 1975 has since been installed in 30 ships mostly of the 10000 gross ton class cargo type as of June 1978. During this period, about half the number of the engines were opened up for inspection, with pistons pulled out, in guarantee dry docking. In the design stage of the E type engine, a variety of calculations and tests were performed to ensure that the engine would be perfect in every respect. The operational results turned out satisfactory in general, attesting to the propriety of the design policy. In particular, there was no trouble attributable to the high power rate attained by the two-stage turbocharging system, and the engine performance was stable. The wear of piston rings and cylinder liners was smaller than expected. On the whole, the excellence of the two-stage turbocharged UE-E type engine was confirmed. The new two-stage turbocharged UE-E type engines have been developed and put to practical service. In doing so, the engine performance was not only improved but also efforts to the improvement of durability and reliability were devoted. To confirm the effects of these improvements, the authors have positively followed up the operational results after delivery of the ships. Fortunately, the engines have been operating in a very satisfactory condition up to the present time.
