The goal of this paper is to review the present range of SULZER Diesel engines in view of low quality fuels. A brief description of fuel/combustion related design features is given. Particular attention is paid to low quality fuels expected to penetrate the market in non-negligible quantities in the not too distant future, and last but not least a possible contender in the field of synthetic fuels is presented. As a result of the service records presented, it may be concluded that the range of engines presented with their typical design features - and in particular the valveless crosshead engine - is well suited to burn fuels of low quality. The mid- as well as the long-term future does, on account of a sound basis to build-on and a concentrated development effort, look very promising. Synthetic crudes, with minor modifications to the present designs, can be burnt efficiently.
