Taking advantage of favourable experience gained previously on a 16-cylinder engine of its own, Ganz-Mavag developed the turbocharging with pulse-converters of the SEMT-Pielstick 18 PA4-V-185 type engine. This turbocharging system may be justified by comparing the pulse /Büchi/ system with the equipressure charging system, and may be considered as a combination of these. The pulse-converter system gives near the cylinder head quite the same pressure waves as with the pulse system, which results in excellent scavenging of the cylinder. At the same time, the exhaust gas turbine is working at practically constant pressure, which results in best efficiency of the turbine. Geometrical shape of the pulse converter is very important, especially the variation of cross-section before the confluence of the gas flows must conform to gas dynamic rules. The 18 PA4-185 engine has been fitted with three-entry converters. Favourable economical balance of this turbocharging process results on one hand from engine running characteristic improvement, on the other hand from other advantages. Experience gained on eight locomotives of 2700 HP on regular hauling duty confirmed previous economical estimations.
