The requirements to the marine propulsion plants have a tendency to become versatile in power and revolution ranges to match more strictly with the specific characters of the various ships. To meet the requirements, the application of geared plants by 4 cycle medium speed diesel engines has been acknowledged to be the most practical solution, and actually they have been applied to some kinds of projects. However, the cylinder output of these engines were rather small (around 500 HP), thus there have been the limits of the applications. In order to defeat the limits and meet the requirements for higher power ranges, the authors' company has developed 600 mm bore engine having cylinder output of 1500 bhp since 1970 sponsored by the Japan Ship's Machinery Development Association. This paper reports some of the results obtained through the development works carried out up to now. The items are as follows: 1. Combustion researches on single cylinder test engine in the view point of the relation between various factors in the fuel injection system and engine performances. 2. Special design features based on the investigations regarding strength and thermal load, etc. 3. Considerations paid on the constructions of the engine to make maintenance works easy.
