Automation of large gas engine compressors has become important with the increases in engine size, the uprating at reduced ambient temperatures and the trend to unattended operation and remote controlled compressor stations. Starting and shutdown sequences for typical engine compressors and recommended protective devices are presented with charts and tables. Methods of regulating compressor speed and capacity are discussed as well as optimum loading systems for reciprocating compressors using automatic control of clearance pockets and other means. Full automatic operation of engines and/or turbines in an unattended or remote controlled gas pipeline compressor station is described and examples illustrated.
