The automation of ships, when it aims to reduce the intervention on the spot of operating personnel and to suppress the permanent surveillance of this personnel leads to take a certain number of dispositions to maintain operating conditions to a satisfactory level, i.e. at least as safe as that of traditional installations. Concerning the interventions on the spot of the personnel and taking into consideration only the operations related to the main engines themselves, it is essential to suppress all high periodicity servitudes concerning particularly lubrification, draining, temperature regulation, etc. In that which concerns the safety, the controls which were previously carried out by the watch-keepers must be secured automatically especially with regard to leakages of high pressure fuel, temperatures of the various elements and pressures of various fluids. Remote control itself rises a certain number of problems since it is necessary to ensure automatically the dispositions intended to avoid all risks of particular deterioration of the engines, for example consequently to heavy variations of the rate operation. The whole of the dispositions to be taken with regards to what has been said hereabove are examined in the paper and a certain number of particulars are discussed. Moreover perspectives are foreseen which can be offered by an accurate control of the operating conditions of the engines, notably with a view of a better knowledge of their reliability and of drawing from it information useful to the builder as well as to the owner.
