Special characteristics of diesel engines for installation in warships with minimum weight and overall dimensions for a given power are described. The performance at sea is discussed. General rules governing their use (no definite cruising speed, need to 'keep station' etc.) are outlined. Running checks (necessary apparatus: thermometers, apparatus for reading, cylinder pressures, speedometers etc.) are dealt with. The effect of running troubles is shown. The breakdown of a single component part or piece of apparatus should not immobilize the vessel. Periodic maintenance is important. It should be possible to carry out a fairly large number of checks on engines when they are not running without being necessary to put them out of action (checking tightness of bolts and studs, inspection of highly stressed components or those subject to excessive wear, etc.). The importance of inspections is emphasized. The values of clearances, wear or out of alignment, necessitating the replacement of components or their re-alignment are frequently badly defined.
