In this paper the history of the technical developments undertaken to meet the current Japanese exhaust regulations while improving engine power and fuel economy are described. Also discussed are some new approaches which have been adopted in the P11C engine. These new advances include the adoption of an electronically controlled inline fuel injection pump, centrally located fuel injectors, 4 valve cylinder head, ductile cast iron pistons and mixed flow turbine turbocharger. This advanced engine has the potential to meet the next set of environmental regulations with yet further improvements in fuel economy. This paper also discusses the current status of key technologies required for the diesel engine in the next century. These key technologies include advanced fuel injection systems, exhaust gas recirculation, exhaust gas aftertreatment and energy recovery devices, such as electric diesel hybrid engines. The combination of these technologies in a well integrated manner will be required for the diesel engine to remain competitive in the long term.
