Following the long term investigation of engine mounting technology, we have developed an 'Active Vibration Isolating System' providing better vibration isolating effect between an engine and its seating than an ordinary passive rubber mounting. This system was first applied to the Kobe University of Mercantile Marine Trainingship 'Fukae Maru III'. This paper discusses the principle and features of this system, the development activities carried out on a test apparatus and the application results on 'Fukae Maru III'. The effectiveness of the newly developed 'Active Vibration Isolating System' was confirmed and completed according to the following items. The basic principle of the active control system was established mainly for marine application. The outline of the active control system has been studied and the system was checked by means of simulation. The isolating effect of the active control system vas investigated by using the test apparatus with proto-type active control system. Reduction of more than 20 dB in vibration level was observed in the controlled frequency range. Based on the results obtained from the test apparatus and simulations, the active control isolating system for the practical application was made and its effectiveness was confirmed during the sea trial and in ship's service after necessary improvements. By activating the active control, reduction of 20 dB in vibration level under the bridge was observed in the fundamental frequency of the engine revolutions.
