In operating four-stroke Diesel engines, for marine and stationary applications it has become evident more than two decades ago already that light alloys have reached the limits of usability in the areas mainly subjected to thermal loads on the single-piece pistons commonly used at that time. Moreover, the resistance to mechanical abrasion at the top land by solid combustion residues proved to be not adequate. To overcome these difficulties the favourable properties of different materials were combined on one piston: the composite piston. This design made it possible to take advantage of different materials, each of which is best suited for the kind of load placed in its critical areas. Since then the composite piston with forged steel crown and forged light-alloy skirt has become the leading design world-wide for use in engines operated on heavy fuel. Firing pressures of 150 to 160 bar, in tests of 190 to 200 bar and even more, the use of heavy fuels with very high viscosity, high sulphur and ash contents, the application as power plants and auxiliary engines to be operated at partial and full load, also the desirability of small working clearances in all operating conditions, have led increasingly to design variants of the composite piston. This report deals with the engineering possibilities, with methods of calculation and investigation by way of finite elements and photoelasticity, and with the operational experience gained so far.
