Sikorsky Aircraft, in an attempt to reduce costs, investigated Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) for the design of tooling for composite molds. KBE was identified as a method to aid process re-engineering. A project selection criteria matrix approach was developed and used to maximize the project pay back. The selected project's goal was to automate the design of two families of mold transport substructures using KBE. A software model of the design process was created using the ICAD System from ICAD, Inc. Several software modules were created which implemented the following functions: mold substructure specification, support structure selection, structural analysis, geometry creation, bill of material creation, and drawing creation. The project demonstrated that KBE is effective for automating mold transport substructure design. Preliminary system validation indicated that the KBE reduces design time by 75 % and produced higher quality designs than manual methods. Better support structures are selected using KBE because more complex mathematical models are used and more iterations can be performed to select the optimal design. Standard design practices are utilized which simplify fabrication and reduce the overall cost of the tooling.
