Waterjet systems are currently being developed for the U.S. Marine Corps Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) program. Design methods and procedures are briefly discussed, and some development issues that have evolved during the course of this technology development effort are covered. In particular, the need for improved vehicle propulsor matching and optimization has been identified and efforts now underway in this area are described. The importance of understanding inlet aeration and its effects on propulsor performance has been made evident and some correlations of test data and theoretical model predictions presented. In a concurrent program to develop an improved pumpjet for the Military Amphibious Reconnaissance System (MARS) outboard motor, performance of a prototype design has been found to improve greatly on that of the conventional MARS outboard motor propeller drive. Design and development of this prototype are covered briefly, and current efforts described. Finally, a discussion of some promising areas of future development in waterjet technology is presented, and new concepts briefly described.
