This paper describes the simulation of the docking system of the Space Shuttle orbiter and the Russian space station Mir. The system is a hybrid version of a Russian docking system called the androgynous peripheral attachment system (APAS). Three analysis tools were used to evaluate APAS - Dynamic Analysis and Design System (DADS), First-Order Analysis Simulation Tool (FAST), and Ring-Finger Docking Dynamics (RFDD). This paper outlines each of the tools and explains how test and analysis results complemented one another and were valuable aids in explaining and demonstrating the complicated dynamics of docking. The paper briefly describes the docking mechanism, elaborates on the applied analysis methodology, correlates analysis results with test results, explains the analysis performed, and offers an overview of the insights gained by analytically simulating the docking event.
