Previous published work examined the role of marine gelcoats in crack formation, blister formation and yellowing. The importance of water in these phenomena was seen throughout these studies. As an extension of the knowledge of coatings for the marine industry, the studies published here will measure the rate of water transmission through a number of gelcoats manufactured by Ferro and its competition. The influence of film thickness on this rate of transport follows normal diffusion laws. What is new from this work is the rate of transport as a function of cure of the gelcoat. These same gelcoats were also exposed to hot and boiling water for blister formation studies. The results of these several gelcoat tests will enhance the understanding of gelcoat performance. In addition, these results will hopefully assist the marine industry in optimizing the use of gelcoats.
