The relatively recent availability of UHM PAN based carbon fibres with significantly superior properties has led Alenia Spazio to the characterization of a new material system intended to replace currently qualified UHM CFRP materials. A Toray M55J fibre based material with M18 modified epoxy resin from Ciba/Brochier was selected and compared to the previous standard, a GY 70 based prepreg. An important improvement in tensile strength was confirmed with no significant changes in other mechanical and physical properties.
