Selection of the appropriate structure concept and selection of the materials which are able to sustain the hostile environmental conditions of the re-entry flight was a major undertaking during the development phases of the european spaceplane programme Hermes. Evaluation of the hot- and cold-structure materials and investigation in structure dimensioning rules has reached a high degree of maturity and was decided to be continued in the Manned Space Transportation Programme (MSTP) technology studies, after re-orientation of the Hermes programme, beginning of 1993. The following contribution summarizes the major activities performed in the field of structures and materials of the Hermes spaceplane programme and highlights the continuation of those activities in the MSTP technology studies.
