Ovonic nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) electric vehicle batteries have progressed to full-sized battery packs powering a variety of electric vehicles. Under real driving conditions, 70-80 Wh/kg has been delivered to the wheels. More significantly, Ovonic batteries have the highest volumetric energy density available extending the practical range for electric vehicles from under 100 miles to 200 miles and beyond. Their high power capability has provided 0-60 mph acceleration in under 10 seconds and a top speed of approaching 90 mph. Successful operation has been demonstrated over ambient temperature conditions ranging from -20 deg F to +105 deg F. Ovonic electric vehicle batteries have achieved over 500 charge-discharge cycles under simulated driving conditions. Durability testing of these maintenance-free batteries is now underway in vehicles on the road. Manufacturing processes have been developed to produce cost-competitive Ovonic batteries. Consequently, a commercialization program has been initiated to produce Ovonic NiMH electric vehicle batteries at volume.
