A good efficiency of the drive is an important factor for the increase of the range of electric vehicles. Many electric vehicles that have been produced so far are equipped with a motor in connection with a manual shifted gear. Here, the driver has two degrees of freedom to determine the working point of the drive: the chosen gear and the position of the accelerator pedal. For such a drive configuration one grade of freedom, namely the chosen gear, could be used to operate the whole drive system in the area of the best efficiency. This paper shows with an example the calculation of the optimal gear and the characteristic curve of gearshift in the whole working area of an EV. The fundamental characteristics of the curve of optimal gearshift are shown. Different drive system parameters, like temperature of the motor, state of charge of the battery, temperature of the gear etc. influence the curve of optimal gearshift. The decrease of the range, for different non-optimal gearshift curves is presented. The conclusion would be: driving the EV with the optimum gear can increase the range of the EV. The results can be used for the control of automated switchgear.
