Air conditioners (A/C's) used for electric vehicles (EV's) tend to be inverter air conditioners which allow a higher degree of efficiency through elaborate control of the compressor. To execute normal charging of the battery at night, a charger must be mounted on the EV, during which time the air conditioner is not in operation. The authors have developed a technique in which the air conditioner inverter may be used as a charger. This allows not only elimination of the encumbering charging circuit but results in lower harmonics of the current that emanates from the power system and higher power factor. This paper reports results of bench tests of an onboard charger using the A/C inverter.
