Energy consumption by on-road use electric vehicles owned by Japanese electric power companies was investigated as a research project sponsored by Central Electric Power Council for the past one year. Energy consumption by EVs and driving conditions were estimated from the data obtained by on-board monitoring systems installed on several test cars, whereas overall power input form AC power supply was recorded by each driver in the test interval. Obtained data are analysed to estimate energy consumption in EVs, and after that, driving conditions are also analysed with respect to energy consumption. In the paper, outline of the monitoring system and measuring items, and method and procedure of the analysis will be shown with some data examples. The configuration of energy consumption by each factor, i.e., charging equipment, battery, auxiliary equipment, driving power are analysed by estimating battery conditions. The characteristics of on-road driving conditions are also analysed statistically, and its relation to energy use are estimated by regression analysis. As the results, total energy consumption is divided by each factor including driving conditions, and future possibility of improving total efficiency is suggested.
