Research and technology activities that support or enable numerous NASA programs are described for the technical areas of finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, structural testing, structural dynamics, vibroacoustics, and probabilistics. It is demonstrated that each technology task provides a benefit that addresses a problem area or meets a need in a space program. These benefits and past application of existing technologies to programs and investigations underline the importance of technology development to success and efficiency of space programs. The Reusable Launch Vehicle program is discussed as an example of how critical technologies often must be developed or enhanced to enable space program concepts. Technology transfer activities and various mechanisms by which this transfer takes place are described. Private industry and other government agencies have benefited directly from technologies such as those described in this paper.
