This paper presents a methodology for probabilistic loads analysis and its application to the STS-71 orbiter/Mir space station docking. It is known that the docking mechanism-induced loads on the Mir space station due to the Mir/orbiter Shuttle mission are strongly affected by the initial docking contact conditions. The docking loads analyses are based on the dynamic model developed using an androgynous peripheral attachment system (APAS) docking mechanism, flexible Mir space station, and rigid orbiter. The docking contact conditions represent the relative vehicle docking interface states at the time of first mechanical contact. A Monte Carlo simulation with 300 sets of initial conditions is used to screen load indicators for the most critical ones. A procedure to compute the probability density function of any critical load indicator has been defined. This procedure can also be used to identify the most probable initial conditions which would result in 3 sigma or any other desired load indicator response.
