This paper describes methods used to extract meaningful mechanical fatigue information from a complex automotive structure. The use of modal analysis, sensitivity evaluations and operating deflection shapes (ODS) has been reviewed. The interaction of the incomplete modal model representation, and non-resonant forced responses have also been discussed. Identification of procedural issues and discussions of available techniques for ODS and modal database manipulation have been provided. These discussions have been offered along with experimental results and field experience in actual production applications. The advantages of the graphical interface and animation capabilities afforded by the modal computer system have augmened the understanding of the dynamic behaviour of the test system.
