In this paper, the meshing between the rack on ball nut and the gear sector on stub shaft in ball recirculating steering gear with variable ratio is discussed systematically. The variable ratio characteristic, the path of contact, the profiles and flanks of the teeth of the gear sector, the meshing limitations and cutting interferences and the backlash are studied, with some valuable results obtained. And a set of new techniques as well as an apparatus to cut the teeth of the gear sector are presented.
