Anti-lock braking systems are becoming a common standard fitment on road vehicles. The advantages of modern systems are clear; shorter stopping distances on low micro surfaces, improved vehicle stability under braking, steerage possible under the heaviest braking. These advantages are present when the system is operating, however it is also important to establish the effect of failures and how often might they occur. This paper presents a summary of results from a study into the reliability and fail-safe characteristics of vehicle braking systems. The study used Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis and Fault Tree Analysis to consider how and how often braking systems might fail. Two conventional braking systems were analysed, a hydraulic dual circuit, servo-assisted car braking system and an air-braked system from a 3-axle tractor unit. In addition several representative anti-lock braking systems were studied. The results show the relative reliabilites of conventional and anti-lock braking systems. Conclusions are drawn regarding the influence of anti-lock braking system reliability on vehicle safety. Some suggestions are made as to how to improve braking system design to improve reliability and safety.
