After a period of low effort in the development of new aluminum alloy products for aerospace, a flurry of activity began in the late 1970s. This renewed effort was stimulated by the oil embargo. Increases in the price of jet fuel and projections of even further price hikes sparked interest in products which could save weight in the structure of jet liners. Aluminum producers were concerned that the need to save weight would drive airframe builders to polymer matrix composites, so they devoted considerable effort to the development of improved aluminum alloy products. Other companies which had developed technologies such as rapid solidification processing and mechanical alloying saw an opportunity to displace the aluminum producers from their role as suppliers of structural materials to the airframe industry. This paper gives a snapshot of what the situation is in the mid-1990s. The continued inroads of polymer matrix composites, as exemplified by the graphite-epoxy horizontal stabilizer of the Boeing 777, continues to drive the development of new aluminum-base products.
