There is great interest in the application of laser technology to the welding of aluminium alloys for automotive applications. CO2 and Nd:YAG laser welding procedures have been developed to weld sheets, profiles and cast materials where advantages include the capability of higher welding speeds and lower distortion when compared to other welding techniques. However, the weld quality obtained is particularly important with respect to the subsequent performance of the joint. This paper describes the results of work to establish tensile and formability properties of CO2 and Nd:YAG laser welds in a range of automotive aluminium alloys. Causes and effects of porosity and an assessment of the crack susceptibility of autogeneous laser welds in these alloys will also be presented.
