A new rapid prototyping process has been developed for use within the automotive tool manufacturing industry. The process uses a CNC milling machine to cut profiles from sheet material. These are generated from cross-sections taken from a CAD model. The profiles are stacked in layers and bonded together. The model is completed using hand finishing and then used for conventional pattern-making purposes. The process has several benefits over conventional rapid prototyping systems including reduced cost, better surface finish, utilisation of existing equipment and it does not require a solid CAD model.
