The rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery system enjoys a growing presence as the OEM's battery of choice for small capacity portable devices. Based on its proven performance capabilities and environmentally benign character, it is a viable and attractive candidate for hybrid (HV) and all-electric vehicles (E.D.) that can be achieved with Pb-acid and Ni-Cd batteries, maintenance-free operation, life of 5-10 years, no requisite elevated operating temperature, environmentally benign materials of construction in abundance for large scale production, abuse tolerance, and safety. However, large capacity nickel-alkaline batteries constructed with conventional plaque-based electrodes in prismatic cell cases will likely be prohibitively expensive for EV applications. EEI is developing a patent pending bipolar battery design as a means to reduce production costs dramatically. The innovative bipolar design also boosts power density and enhances the ability to construct high series voltage strings. EEI's development status is reviewed, including test results of individual and multi-cell stacks as well as conceptual designs for all-electric vehicle batteries.
