The plasma spray process (surface preparation and coating deposition) as reached production status with a number of products of different sizes and shapes in the automotive industry in Europe. The success of the process is due both to the properties of coating in the as-sprayed and machined condition and the deposition process in providing a high rate/low cost deposition for the high volume of parts involved. As the plasma spray process can deposit all types of materials, coatings based on spinel, molybdenum and molybdenum blends, carbides and thermal barrier materials have lead to the deposition of coatings on a production and also an experimental basis. This paper describes the plasma spray process as a production tool using the examples given above. It covers some of the factors involved in coating high numbers of parts and the measures necessary to cope with environmental issues in existing areas of manufacturing.
