Classical control strategies use drive signals based on state error or equations of motion to make a system home in on set points. Supervisory strategies to mimic a human operator and usually operate at a higher level than classical strategies. For example, they sometimes decide when control by classical schemes is likely to succeed and then set points and gains for it. This paper discusses the potential of these strategies for subsea robots.
