For the new European space launcher ARIANE 5 new valves and valve actuation units have been developed. In the case of the tank pressurization and helium supply system valve actuation times in the order of 20-50 ms, liquid hydrogen and liquid helium temperatures, pressures of up to 210 bar, the need of a very compact volume and low power lead to a requirement profile of the valve actuator which is met by a monosectional linear motor design type, a directly controlled solenoid actuator with an additional permanent magnet. The modelling of the magnetic circuit comprises the elements of permanent magnet, solenoids, ferromagnetic material and several airgaps. The solutions of the model are gained by means of a finite element programme which is capable of taking into account transient and dynamic processes. This is necessary because of the moving armature which is part of the electro- and permanent magnetic loop and which contributes to the magnetic flux change. The results of major interest being calculated are the forces vs. stroke curves and the current vs. time curves. The development and the dependence of the actuator temperature was to be taken into account. The simulation results were compared to static and dynamic test results and show good agreement.
