In February 1992 the Delft University of Technology started research in active magnetic bearings for support of linear motion. This research is currently concentrated at the Laboratory for Micro Engineering at the faculty for mechanical engineering. It was recognised that apart from a contact free way of suspending an object, a contact free way of propelling it was needed too. This paper will describe how magnetic fields can be used for contact free suspension and propulsion at the same time. It will be shown that the suspension is generated using reluctance forces of the magnetic field, while propulsion is generated using Lorentz forces. This paper will show that both forces can be generated and controlled independently unsing the Suspension and Propulsion Unit, or SPU, that was developed at the laboratory for Micro Engineering.
