With the latest EEC external noise regulations due for enforcement in 1995/96 presenting a challenge to the vehicle NVH engineer, attention is focusing on the tyre as a potential problem noise source. A major concern is that due to the nature of the pass-by test, where overall noise levels are measured during vehicle full acceleration, it is not an easy task to quantify tyre noise contribution. On this test it is not possible to eliminate the power train noise, unlike for a coast-by test where the only significant noise generator is tyre noise (and possibly aerodynamic noise on some types of vehicle). The paper describes how an attempt was made to estimate the tyre noise contribution during tests on a reduced noise development vehicle for a sample of 8 tyres provided by tyre manufacturers and compares tyre noise on pass-by tests (accelerating torque) with noise on coast-by tests. A comparison is shown of the frequency content of the maximum noise of some of the tyres during pass-by tests.
