Active control would theoretically appear to be a promising method for reducing the booming noise preceived in vehicles with four-cylinder engines. In this paper we give a practical evaluation of alternative active control techniques. Using prototype rigs fitted in the same car model, we experimented with applying control in proximity to the source of the vibration, then with control in the passenger compartment itself. Results, in terms of both vibration and acoustic levels, differed considerably between these two cases. In this paper we seek to assess maximum feasible performance potentials for active control noise reduction methods, and to identify the technological difficulties involved in applying these methods.
