A detailed mathematical model of a plunging tripode joint has been created using an algebraic programming language and classical equations to describe the kinematics, friction forces, and static equilibrium. Results have been validated by laboratory measurements of transmission error, bending moments and forces. Numerous geometry variations have been evaluated iteratively, and modifications to reduce periodic axial force, tertiary moment, or transmission error have been identified. In tests on a rig and in a vehicle on a rolling road, third-order axial exitation forces ('shudder') have been reduced by 50 percent, and the subjective NVH rating improved by 3 points.
