Fluorozirconate glasses are prone to devitrification during their processing on the ground. This is caused by homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation. Microgravity environment could help in reducing homogeneous nucleation by preventing gravity driven density segregation and heterogeneous nucleation by providing a containerless processing opportunity for bulk glass synthesis. Subsequent fibre drawing process could cause growth of the nuclei already formed during synthesis and also initiate further nucleation due to density segregation. Glass processing experiments on the ground, on the T-33 aircraft and onboard the CSAR-I sounding rocket have indicated that microgravity helps in reducing crystallization during heat treatment of fluoride glases for fibre drawing.
