Recent Stirling engine research at the University of Canterbury has concentrated on developing a 12 volt 200 Watt battery charging unit for yachts, which is quiet, efficient and independent of local weather and vessel motive power or speed. The hermetically sealed pre-production prototype uses air pressurised to 10 bar as working fluid, self regulation, automatic start and shutdown depending on battery charge and electronic error checking. These features allow the user to start the system when boarding the craft and to leave it running as necessary to ensure the batteries sustain a suitable level of charge. Through the design process several novel features have been developed, including a wobble yoke mechanism using solely prelubricated ball race bearings. Other features include a stamped flat plate cold-end heat exchanger, cylinder-mounted pressure-activated seals, one-piece cast refractory heater assembly utilising combined convective and radiative heat exchange and an electronic system control. The system design requirements, design features and test results are briefly discussed.
