Particulate reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites (MMCs) are currently undergoing extensive evaluation as a potential replacement for cast iron in automotive braking systems (discs and drums). The driving force for this application is weight reduction, anticipated to be in the order of fifty percent. In order for MMCs to be successful, cost effective manufacturing routes must be identified that will reliably produce defect-free parts while maximizing both casting and machining yields. This paper describes a generic casting approach which allows high quality, defect-free, components to be consistently produced with high casting yields.
