A computer-based system comprising all possible consequences of a road network and its traffic could be very useful. The Road and Traffic Research Group (CHART) at Chalmers University of Technology has been commissioned by the Swedish National Road Administration to develop such a system. The core of the system is a road traffic simulation model, called Mimic. Mimic is a periodic-scanned microscopic traffic simulation model in which each vehicle and driver has individual characteristics, and with which the influence on each vehicle of other vehicles, road design, and physical environment can be calculated. The status of every vehicle is known at any given moment. in terms of position, speed, acceleration, etc. MIMIC can handle a large number of roads and intersections of arbitrary geometrical design. The consequence models of the system estimate, for the road users and the environment, the most important effects of the road traffic. The road user effects considered in this system are traffic safety, travel time, vehicle costs and community severance. The environmental impact considered are air pollution, noise, and vibration. A new car-following model has been developed, in which the choice of speed is relative to the speed and acceleration of the vehicle in front in the same platoon, as well as on the driver's desired time headway to the vehicle in front models for overtaking manoeuvres and free flowing vehicles have been developed. The primary function of the road traffic simulation model is to generate input data for the estimation models of the system.
